Our passion is climbing psychology.

Climb in Flow is a collaboration of a doctor in psychology, a high end athlete and an instructor/author, all with an obsession in climbing and a passion for climbing psychology.

They have a combined experience of 56 years, in all aspects of climbing, whether it be bouldering, sport climbing, competing at a high level, big walling, alpine and winter climbing.  Whichever discipline you favour, we have the experience to help.

It doesn’t matter whether you climb E10 or S, 8C or 4C, when you climb at your personal limit, we all experience the same feelings.  We will help you on your way to climb free.

ALLEGRA MAGUIRE

Allegra is a psychologist, and PhD student in decision making, she has a Batchelor degree in psychology and a Master’s of Science in Applied Experimental Psychological Sciences.  She is Italian, and living in Sweden.

She only recently came onto the scene, but realised she loves climbing very quickly.  In her first year of climbing, she progressed from not being able to do a single pull-up to climbing 7a. After two years of climbing, she competed in the Swedish Lead Championships, finishing 7th overall.  Her biggest challenge was the fear of falling.  She managed to build confidence and ways to deal with the psychological issues which came up for her in climbing.  And quickly realised it is a forgotten part of training in climbing.

She is now a mental climbing coach, with an array of clients.  From adults to youth climbers, whether beginners or elite climbers.  She also set up a YouTube channel called Climbing Psychology, where she shared her studies of psychology applied to climbing.

EMMA TWYFORD

Emma has been climbing for 27 of her 34 years. She started out trad climbing in the Lake District with her Dad and friends.  From the age of 10 she enjoyed competing, became British Bouldering Champion and represented Team GB till the age of 24. At this point she decided to return to her love of outdoor climbing. To fulfil her love of climbing she is also a route setter and climbing coach.

Emma was the first British woman to redpoint 9a with an ascent of the Big Bang, she has also on-sighted numerous 8a’s. She is one of very few women to have head pointed E9 and has also flashed E8 on trad. In 2019 she turned to Alpine climbing making the first British ascent of Camilotto Pelissier(8a/+) in the Dolomites.

At a very young age in a national comp Emma was the last to climb on a route in the finals, she set off looking like she was about to throw up and didn’t perform her best. This encouraged her to focus in on the mental skills to help deal with the pressure she put upon herself. In doing Psychology as part of her degree, and also working with a PHD student on mental tactics for competing she developed an interest in how much of an important role mental tactics have within sport . It is a key element to trying hard and having fun but also a wonderful part of this is figuring out what works for each individual person. She loves passing on the knowledge she has developed over many years of trial and error to help others improve.

KEVIN ROET

Kevin is a climbing instructor, obsessive climber and the author of the book Climbing Psychology.  He has been climbing for 25 years now, and lives and breathes it.  It is a passion and way of life, which he loves to share with others.  He loves every climbing discipline, for each has its own merits and challenges.  He has a particular love for big walling and winter climbing, as it provides a platform to be challenged mentally as well as physically.  He loves the pursuit of challenge.

After a few unfortunate incidents, Kevin developed a fear of falling.  After a lot of reading, research, and work on his head game, his performance improved again.  He realised that so many other climbers suffer from some form a psychological challenges in their climbing.  He wanted to help others deal with this part of climbing.  So, he established the Climbing Psychology workshop 8 years ago.  This makes Kevin a good mental skills coach in climbing, as he can relate to most of the issues, we all come up against, from first-hand experience.
